Like a car, the human body has an engine which requires fuel. This fuel is provided by food in the form of calories.  

A calorie is the unit of measurement that describes the amount of energy found in food. It also describes the amount of energy the body uses to perform a particular function.
 
When your caloric intake exceeds your caloric needs, you gain weight. Overweight people consume more calories than they expend.
 
If you want to lose weight, learn the caloric intake of a particular food or drink. Some foods contain more calories than others. Choose foods that give you the most nutrients at the lowest calories.
 
Carbohydrates & Insulin
 
 
A calorie is a unit of energy.Your body needs calories for energy. Calories come from three important nutrients; protein, fat, and carbohydrates.
 
There are two types of carbohydrate - simple carbs and complex carbs. A healthy individual can gain weight or lose weight in relations to the kind of carbohydrates he/she eats. 
 
Foods rich in carbohydrates are absorbed immediately in the liver and muscles as glycogen.
 
Glycogen is a type of glucose that is broken down rapidly to produce a source of energy for the body. Once the level of glycogen is absorbed, the excess is converted into fat and stored in the body for later use.
 
Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose in the bloodstream. A diet high in carbohydrates will cause a rise in blood glucose. To remedy this, the pancreas secretes insulin into the bloodstream to lower the level of glucose.
 
Insulin is a fat storage hormone.
 
Too much carbohydrates causes the overproduction of insulin. Insulin picks up excess carbohydrate and converts it into stored fat. This leads to the accumulation of fat in the cells.
 
By cutting carbohydrates from your diet, your glycogen reserve is depleted. Your body goes into a metabolic state called ketosis, where it begins to burn its own fat for fuel. Once, your body produces ketonic bodies, it begins to suppress the appetite and prevent cravings.
 
The goal for weight loss is to shift from burning carbohydrates to burning fat for fuel.
 
Simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates:
 
White sugar is a simple sugar. It supplies the body with a quick boost of energy. Foods high in sugar tempt us to eat more. Overindulgence in sugar can lead to the over-production of insulin. Most of the time, sugar is hidden in processed foods, and we don't even know it. Read labels carefully and learn the names of other forms of sugar.
 
Complex carbohydrates is the body's best source of energy. It contains lengthy chains of glucose molecules that take time to break down. Because they have a natural time-release, they supply the body with long-lasting energy.
 
Complex carbohydrates are more filling, it is best to eat them in the morning before noon.
 
The digestion of carbohydrates starts in the mouth, chew your food 30 times before swallowing.
 
Protein Promotes Weight Loss

Half of the body's organic structure is made of protein. The defense system requires protein for the formation of antibodies. Protein helps make hemoglobin, enzymes, and hormones. It plays an important role in building strong bodies and repairing body tissues. Eating a high quality protein diet will provide the body with the essential amino acids necessary to preserve and repair muscles.

Form good eating habits so you can maintain your weight once you reach your goal.

Start by controlling the amount of food you put on your plate.
 
The general rule for normal portion size for cooked vegetable is 1/2 cup (the size of a fist). The portion size for meat is 3 oz (the width of the palm). The portion size for rice, pasta, and couscous is 1/2 cup.
 
Space your meals every 3-4 hours to keep hunger under control.
 
Consume protein through several small meals throughout the day. Protein at each meal helps reduce the surge of insulin, prevents muscle loss, and promotes weight loss.
 
Foods that contain high quality protein are chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, almond butter, legumes, nuts, seeds, and leafy green vegetables

Get your complex carbohydrates from fibrous fruits and natural grains.
 
Eliminate unhealthy bad carbohydrates like sugar and refined starch, they have no nutritional value and they make people gain weight. By eating less
sugar, you cut calories.
 
Have good fats such as monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and omega-3 essential fatty acids such as olive oil, almonds, walnuts, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, and salmon.
 
Cut down on trans fatty acids and saturated fat, which are associated with increased risk of heart disease and weight gain.
 
Consume no more than 120 grams of dairy per day.
 
Add hot spices to your meal. They speed up the metabolism and burn fat.

Increase soluble fiber intake. Fiber provides more fullness, without the calories.

 
Take one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, twice a day.
 
 
If hungry have a big glass of water and sip it slowly. Drink water regularly to flush out toxins and purify the blood.
 
Do not drink "while" eating.

Do not eat before bedtime. The stomach must have periods of rest.
 
Make a shopping list, take it with you when shopping, and stick to it.
 
Use a journal. Record what you eat every day. Write down how much exercise you do. Record your measurement and weight. If you lose weight one week but not the next, you can see in your journal what works, and what doesn't work for you.
 
Emotions have a powerful influence over your body, address the cause. Some people overeat as a compensation of some dissatisfaction in their lives. When you believe you don't deserve better, you naturally attract unto yourself those foods that reflect your state of mind (junk food or comfort food). Unless, you find the cause for overeating, you will not be able to move forward.
 
Once the weight drops off, don't sit back, get up and workout. Exercise will help you burn off the calories, and keep your skin from sagging. If you never exercised before be realistic, start with five minutes, and add one minute each day until you are doing 30 minutes of exercise a day. Walk one hour a day and lose 250 calories. If you can't go outside walk around the house.
 
Stay motivated. You look good and you feel good, but if you don't stay motivated, you can regain the weight you have lost.
